"Some infinities are bigger than other infinities… But Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity."- Hazel Grace Lancaster.
We open up the story to Hazel Grace, who is your average teenage girl who's diagnosed with cancer and she has to carry around an oxygen tank because her “lungs suck at being lungs.” Hazel joins a support group for cancer survivors. Although she is not thrilled about being a part of this group she soon finds a reason to like it.
Now we get to see Augustus Waters. Her looks attracts Augustus but her its her personality which brings them together. Two of them become fast friends pretty soon, with cancer being the common for both of them. It is very true that no one understands a cancer patient but another cancer patient and the two of them are there for each other through thick and thin. They spend many days and experience together from reading the same books to playing blind video games with their friend Isaac. The biggest impact is left by a book called An Imperial Affliction. This is a book dealing with cancer. Augustus reads the book, likes it so much but gets so frustrated of how it ends (it ends in the middle of a sentence as to show that the girl has either died or got too sick to continue writing). Later on, Augustus finds a way to contact the writer and arranges a meeting with him. Augustus, Hazel and her mom go to Amsterdam to meet him and ask him about what happened next in his story. The author, instead of a prolific genius as his stature looks, he is a mean-spirited drunk who claims he cannot answer any of Hazel’s questions. The two leave Van Houten’s in utter disappointment and they tour Anne Frank’s house. At the end of the tour, Augustus and Hazel share a romantic kiss. They head back to the hotel where they make love for the first and only time. The following day, Augustus confesses that while Hazel was in the ICU he had a body scan which revealed his cancer has returned and spread everywhere. Finally, Hazel realizes that Augustus is the one who is going to face the fate first. Hazel recognizes that she loves him now as much as ever. In his final days Augustus arranges a prefuneral for himself, and Isaac and Hazel give eulogies. Hazel steals a line from Van Houten about larger and smaller infinities. She says how much she loves Augustus, and that she would not trade their short time together for anything in the world.
Augustus dies eight days later. The novel concludes with Hazel reading Augustus’s words. He says getting hurt in this world is inevitable, but we do get to choose who we allow to hurt us, and that he his happy with his choice. He hopes she likes her choice too. The final words of the novel come from Hazel, who says she does.
After reading this book, Aarohi cries and by hearing her Rohan comes to have a check.
Rohan: Hey, what happened? Why you crying baby?
Aarohi didn’t answer and continues crying and suddenly hugs Rohan tightly.
Aarohi(still crying): Rohan, whatever happens in this world I promise to be there for you always and will love you unconditionally. I had realised how much you mean to me and I can’t afford to lose you.
By hearing this, Rohan also gets tears and he hugs her more tightly.
This book is something that depicts that not every story has a happy ending. This book is a tear jerker. Even if this book doesn’t make you cry, it will definitely make you think. This is something that will change the way of thinking towards your life, and those who are important to you.
